As part of the Climate Week NYC, held in New York between 18-24 September 2017, IGA Environment and Sustainability Directorate hosted the event “Climate Change Adaptation, Mitigation and Sustainable Development in Aviation” and presented the "İstanbul New Airport Climate Change Action Plan”.
Bringing together leaders from the international business world, governments and civil society alongside the UN General Assembly every year since 2009, the Climate Week NYC addressed adaptation and management of global climate change this year. At the event “Climate Change Adaptation, Mitigation and Sustainable Development in Aviation”, held on September 19th, Ülkü Özeren, İGA Environment and Sustainability Director, presented the “İstanbul New Airport Climate Change Action Plan” to authorities from the aviation and environment sector, including ICAO, ACI World, UNDP, Rocky Mountain Institute, Carbon Disclosure Project, Heritage Group, Interactive Environment, JetBlue Airlines, NY-NJ Port Authority and EY. The guests indicated that the detailed technical studies on Environment and Sustainability conducted for the İstanbul New Airport are of great importance and will set an example for the global aviation sector.
At the panel, which also focused on topics such as alternative aircraft fuels (Biofuel), the UNDP targets, examples of the fight against climate change at airports, energy efficiency, and airport carbon accreditation (ACA), the “İstanbul New Airport Climate Change Action Plan” by the İGA Environment and Sustainability Directorate was appreciated by the participants as a pioneering work in the global aviation sector in respect with the fight against climate change.
