In an interview with Sky News, Kadri Samsunlu, General Manager and Chief Executive Officer of İGA Airport Operation, stressed the enormous importance of İstanbul New Airport for the Turkish economy. Once all four phases are finished the contribution of the airport to GNP will be around 5 percent, employment will be increased by around 200.000 people and the contribution to the GDP is going be around 40 billion Euro. Samsunlu also announced that the railway connection, which will link the airport with Istanbul will be ready for operation in the first half of next year. “It will have only four stops between the airport and downtown city”, he said.
As a gateway between East and West the airport will be hub for people living on five continents, the flagship carrier Turkish Airlines flies to all of them.“ In a four-hour distance from İstanbul there are 200 destinations and 60 capitals”, Samsunlu mentioned. That requires a hub-mechanism, which can offer cheap transportation for everybody. Next to Turkish Airlines İstanbul New Airport will be able to service all the international carriers, who want to get slot in Turkey to increase their frequencies. “As a brand-new airport, we are having significant room for growth”, Samsunlu pointed out.
