İGA conducts environmental management activities within the scope of its environmental policy.
In this regard, İGA has undertaken to:
• Conduct comprehensive field studies involving all environmental aspects throughout 2014,
• Evaluate potential environmental and social impacts of construction and operation phases,
• Define measures in order to minimize said impacts
These evaluations and management plans are based on IFC (International Finance Corporation) Principles, Turkish Environmental Legislation, international standards and guidelines such as ISO 14001, ICAO, GIIP (Good International Industry Practice), and sustainability mechanisms such as green building - green airport. Shaping our environmental policy, these processes are managed with a consistent approach across the entire operation.
Our Environment Policy
Our Environment Policy As İGA Havalimanlari Adi Ort. Tic. işletmesi, our Environmental Policy is to minimize negative impacts to humans and nature by using utmost level of expertise, science and technology during constructional and operational activities of Istanbul New Airport. Within the context of this policy, we commit that; -We are going to fulfill all legal requirements that iGA is bound to.
• Our activities will be in compliance with National and International environmental and social standards and requirements,
• We will identify our environmental impacts and define proper mitigation measures and manage these effectively,
• We will determine goals and targets annually for continuous improvement of our environmental performance,
• We will determine mitigation targets for energy usage and consumption of natural sources and implement relevant programs, • We will pay utmost attention to use World's limited resources efficiently, following sustainability mechanisms, planning and taking necessary actions to reduce climate change, preservation of biodiversity and ecosystems and will act with environmental consciousness,
• We will manage and control all kind of wastes which will be arised during construction phase, take necessary mitigations and provide continuous improvement to avoid air, water and soil pollution, be attentive to use recycled materials,
• We will help to improve the socio-economic status of local communities within the project influence area and reduce the adverse impacts effectively that could occur during our activities,
• We will inform and increase involvement of our staff, guests, suppliers, subcontractors and stakeholders for our Environmental Policy and studies relevant with mitigation measures for reducing our major environmental impacts.
The project site had been devastated by mining activities since the 1980s. Prior to the beginning of the project, a significant portion of the project site (65%) had lost its natural environment, with three licensed excavation waste landfills operating in the area. The remaining 35% comprises woodlands where the topsoil, which serves as the most valuable source of nutrients, was stripped and stored using appropriate methods before the construction started. This topsoil will be used for landscaping the Istanbul New Airport.
In sum, due to these changes and the fact that soil movement in the area is limited to the project site, carbon emissions will be minimized while ensuring controlled management of soil movement. Air During construction, the dust raised by car and truck movement is controlled via a variety of measures, including regularly sprinkling the roads, limiting vehicle speeds near residential areas, and covering equipment that may generate dust.
ICAO-approved air quality modeling was carried out in collaboration with ADMS-Airport in order to determine the potential impact of operations.
Air quality will be monitored regularly and necessary measures will be taken during the construction and operation phases in order to minimize any impact. Water The project site shows damage caused by past mining activities; there are several bodies of water left over from excavations. These bodies formed as excavated areas were filled with water after the conclusion of mining activities.
Comprehensive hydrogeological surveys conducted at the project site by international consultants have revealed no streams originating from the project site or crossing the site on a permanent basis. In addition, due to the structure and nature of soil at the site, there is no connection between surface and underground waters.
Water in the southern part of the site will be drained into the Alibeyköy Dam Reservoir using appropriate sediment control methods. A significant portion of the water will be used during the construction process for concrete mixing, as domestic water for work site activities, and for road irrigation.
Water in the northern part of the project site will be redirected towards the Black Sea. There will be no discharge to the Terkos Basin.
In the current situation, surface water quality at Terkos and Alibeyköy basins are monitored through regular analyses by accredited laboratories as part of the Water Monitoring Program. Results obtained from these analyses are used to define and manage measures within the scope of Pollution Control Plans. Noise The noise generated during construction is managed through various measures, including the selection of machinery, turning off equipment while not in use, and directing vehicle traffic away from residential areas as possible.
Noise modeling was carried out using the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) Integrated Noise Model INM 7.0d in order to determine the potential impact of operations. Environmental noise was also taken into account, and measures to minimize it were included in the amended Master Plan. Noise contours generated by the model were shared with Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality's Urban Planning teams.
These noise maps will furthermore serve as the groundwork for new zoning plans around the airport area.
