İGA BECOMES STEVIE WINNER OF THE YEAR FOR SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
Thanks to its Social Investment Program started in nine neighborhoods near to the construction site, İstanbul New Airport Project received Corporate Social Responsibility Program of the Year Award at Stevie International Business Awards 2017.
İGA, constructor and operator of the İstanbul New Airport for 25 years, launched “İGA Social Investment Program”, a reflection of its inclusive, sustainable, eco-friendly and egalitarian social impact approach. Becoming a “Bronze Stevie Winner” in Corporate Social Responsibility Program of the Year category, the program notched up an international success. Senem Elçin Berber, Head of Social Management Unit, received the award on behalf of İGA in the ceremony held in Barcelona. İGA Social Investment Program was launched on January 1, 2016 with a view to establish trustworthy relations with neighboring local communities in the vicinity of the airport construction site as well as to develop projects towards that end.
The target audience of the Social Investment Program is made up of 16,000 people directly and indirectly affected by the airport construction. The purpose of the program is to raise the life quality of local communities. Accordingly, the program identifies the social impact in neighborhoods close to the construction site, contributes to the socio-economic development of the local communities and helps manage in the best way possible the current and potential impacts of the construction.
The Social Investment Program consists of two components, namely “Rapid Impact Projects” and “Income Generation Projects.” The former is based on the identification of basic needs and is built on nine categories: consolidation of educational services, lifelong learning, public health activities, women’s integration in socio-economic life, socio-economic activities, youth empowerment, vulnerable groups and basic aids. Based on the findings of an income replacement research, Income Generation Projects seek to strengthen the main and secondary sources of livelihood of farmers, villagers in the forest and families engaged in livestock farming in the region.
In the past 20 months, more than 150 projects and activities were launched as part of the program. More than 150 meetings with 80 stakeholder agencies and over 5,000 one-to-one meetings were held with locals since the inception of the program. A family health center was repaired, 16 educational facilities were built, 18 training workshops were organized, and a total of 182 students from nursery school, 1st and 2nd grade primary school received teeth scanning and treatment services. In order to support employment in the region, İGA and its subcontractors recruited three thousand people. A women’s cooperative was provided with technical and financial aid, and informative meetings were organized for 100 livestock farmers. A complaint mechanism was set up and benefited 10,320 people.
Having scored substantial achievements in a brief amount of time, the program is planning to maintain its level of success in the near future with new projects.
